The Village of Pleasant Prairie is seeking an individual qualified to lead the Fire & Rescue Department. The Department provides both Fire and Rescue (EMS) service, hazardous materials response, and specialized rescue service to the community of Pleasant Prairie and those areas identified in the mutual aid system. The Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department is comprised of full time, part time, and Paid on Call personnel.

Candidates for the position should possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Public or Business Administration or related field or experience deemed equivalent to a college degree. Also required is experience as a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, or staff position of Lieutenant or higher in a municipal fire department with a minimum of ten (10) years, fifteen (15) if no college degree, of progressively responsible work in the administration of fire/emergency medical services, to include the development and implementation of long range strategic plans; Certified WI Fire Instructor I or equivalent; Certified WI Fire Officer I or equivalent; Certified WI Fire Inspector I or equivalent; National Incident Management System Training; Certified WI Paramedic or equivalent; Current WI Driver’s License or equivalent.

The Chief shall be responsible for all activities within the Department, as well as the personnel, department budget and general efficiency of the Department, and shall report directly to the Village Administrator on all matters that do not conflict with state statutes. The Chief shall perform such other duties as are usually incumbent upon the commanding officer of the Fire & Rescue Department and as are detailed in the job description for this position.

The over 300 men and women that make up the Madison Fire Department come from all parts of the United States. We vary in culture as well as educational background. Some of our people stem from generations of fire personnel and some had no experience until becoming a member of our department. The department strives to reflect the diversity of our City in its employees.

The Fire Department provides additional special services to the community. These services include response to hazardous materials incidents, lake and rope rescue, and Advanced Life Support (paramedic). These services offer an opportunity to receive training in these areas.

As a newly hired City of Madison firefighter, you start at the Recruit Academy. The Academy Program is very intensive training. You use both mental and physical skills in preparing for this exciting and demanding career. The class curriculum covers instruction in areas such as fire suppression, inspection, community education, hazardous materials and emergency medical technician. The program for emergency medical technician covers 120 hours. You serve an 18 month probation and a 3-1/2 year apprenticeship.

As a Madison Fire Department Firefighter, you may seek to serve in additional career positions in the areas of fire suppression, Fire Investigation, Training and Administration. Some of these positions are: Firefighter/Paramedic, Apparatus Engineer, Investigator, Officer in Investigation, Training, and Administration.
