Today the Fire Department of the City of New York protects more than 8,000,000 residents in an area of 320 square miles. The department is administered by the Fire Commissioner appointed by and responsible to the Mayor.

The uniformed force is under the command of the Chief of Department and consists of more than 11,400 Fire Officers and fire fighters. In addition, the Department includes 2,800 Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics and Supervisors assigned to the Bureau of Emergency Medical Service (EMS), as well as 1,200 civilian employees.

The Buffalo Fire Department responds to over 60,000 calls a year. Buffalo Fire currently operates 19 engines, nine ladders, one heavy rescue, one hazardous materials unit, one fireboat, four battalions, and one division. General call types include fire, EMS, and hazardous materials incidents.

The Buffalo Fire Department does not transport patients to hospitals. All 911 Transports in the City of Buffalo are handled by Rural/Metro Medical Services who are dispatched through Buffalo Ambulance Dispatch (ADI). Buffalo Fire also utilizes the SMART Team on all MCI incidents and/or MVC's involving School Buses. The SMART Team is a group of Medical Doctors who work out of the Emergency Department at Erie County Medical Center.

Buffalo on average battles a structure fire once a day. The City of Buffalo is heavily laden with wooden balloon style framed buildings, and since many are vacant they are very attractive for arsonists. The BFD has seen much restructuring within the ranks during the past decades with the population in the city dwindling from a high of 600,000 in the 1950's to less than 292,000 in 2006.

Since 1994 alone, the Fire Department has disbanded six engine companies, four ladder companies, and one heavy rescue company. As of 2006, no more closings are expected for the near future.

Through all the turmoil, they have still lived up to their motto "Ut Vivant Alii" ("So others may live").

The Syracuse Fire Department proudly protects 165,000 people living in an area of 25 square miles. They operate out of 11 stations that protect a primarily residential area.

This department provides fire protection for four major hospitals, several large office buildings, Interstates 81 and 690, as well as Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome. The department is a public department whose members are on a paid status having an ISO rating of 1 which they received in 1998.

Established as a paid department in 1877 (consisting of four steamers, one hook & ladder, and one chemical wagon), the Syracuse Fire Department now operates 17 fire companies out of 11 fire stations. A massive modernization plan in the 70's & 80's has made it possible to locate those stations strategically around the city.

The Syracuse Fire Department provides fire suppression & rescue, EMS, HAZ-MAT response, High-angle rescue, Confined Space Rescue, and full fire prevention, inspection, and education services to the citizens of Syracuse.

Current staffing is 420+ uniformed members, operating 10 Engines, 6 trucks, and a three-piece Rescue Company. The Syracuse Fire Department answered over 20,000 alarms in 2009 (including over 9000 EMS calls), and fought over 100 major fires.

Our average response time to anywhere in the City of Syracuse is under four minutes. The Syracuse Fire Department holds an ISO rating of "1" - the only city in New York State to do so.
