The emergency medical and rescue response we provide has become well known to the residents of Manchester. Each piece of fire apparatus is equipped with basic life support and early defibrillation equipment. Every member of this Fire Department is prepared to deliver highly skilled emergency medical and rescue services whenever they are needed.
When city residents are suddenly confronted with an unexpected emergency, the Fire Department usually represents their only resource in dealing with the situation.
Our firefighters have made a commitment to education and training to the highest of standards. This helps us to respond and assist citizens facing a true emergency in the most effective manner.

In addition to fire suppression, we also offer fire
prevention education programs to many groups in our
community. Our code enforcement duties work together
with fire prevention programs to reduce the
conditions that can result in loss by fire.
In order to become eligible for a position at the Manchester Fire Department candidates must possess a CDL-B Drivers License and should be a NH Certified Level II Firefighter and must also be a Nationally Registered EMT.
There is an eligibility list that the Chief of the Department uses to hire new firefighters. In order to be placed on that list a written exam is administered every two years. Upon successful completion of this exam, the individual will take part in a strenuous physical ability test. If you have successfully completed both tests you will then be scheduled for an oral interview. Any candidates successfully completing all three processes will be placed on the eligibility list for two years. Firefighters are selected from the list in effect.
