FIREFIGHTERYUMA
Located in the Yuma and Gila valleys of Southwestern Arizona where Arizona, California, and Mexico converge is Yuma. With a climate that mixes pure desert sunshine with the cool waters of the Colorado River and Gila Rivers, Yuma offers our residents a year round vista of surrounding rugged mountains and green agricultural fields.
The incorporated area of Yuma is approximately 110 square miles and houses over 82,000 full-time residents. The City of Yuma is a full service council-manager government. The City is governed by a charter, Arizona state statutes, and an adopted Strategic Management Plan.
The Fire Department has more than 100 employees in operations, emergency medical services, training, prevention, emergency management, support and administrative services. The Fire Chief oversees all aspects of the Fire Department.
The Department operates five fire stations strategically located throughout Yuma to respond in minutes to most fires within the city limits. This response time positively affects insurance rates paid by owners of property in the city limits. All fire stations respond to 9-1-1 emergency rescue and fire calls. One station is equipped with a hazardous materials vehicle (HAZMAT) and trained personnel who respond to calls related to exposure to hazardous materials.
Fire suppression and emergency medical service employees are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT); many hold advanced EMT and paramedic certifications. They are required to participate in ongoing training and certification.
Fire prevention employees include the City Fire Marshall and fire inspectors. They have a range of responsibilities that include on-site fire inspections of homes and businesses; review of construction and remodeling plans for compliance with fire codes; assisting schools with emergency exit plans and procedures; and investigating fires of known and unknown origins.
The City of Yuma accepts applications on a rolling basis.
