FirefighterCharleston

The Charleston Fire Department proudly protects approximately 60,000 people who live in an area of 33 square miles among the green hills of West Virginia, in valleys created by the Kanawha and Elk Rivers. Charleston is the capital city of West Virginia. It is the seat of Kanawha County and the state’s largest city. Three interstates converge in Charleston: Interstates 64, 77 and 79, linking Midwest cities to those in the East and Southeast. The metropolitan area surrounding Charleston is much larger, with more than 200,000 people.

Our department operates out of nine stations with 200+ paid professionals specializing in fire fighting, emergency medical services, search and rescue operations, hazardous material response, and water rescues.

During 2011, the CFD responded to over 30,000 calls. These responses included all fires (structure, vehicle, trash, brush, dumpster, electrical and outdoor), emergency medical calls (ALS- advanced life support, BLS- basic life support, and first responder), auto accidents, rescues, special assignments, bomb threats, hazardous materials incidents, and mutual aid calls.

CFD uses a civil service testing process to establish their lists, which last three years. For more information on the minimum requirement, please visit: www.cityofcharleston.org
