FirefighterColumbia

The Columbia Fire Department’s mission is to protect lives, property and the environment in Columbia and Richland County. This is achieved by extinguishing and investigating hostile fires, enforcing fire codes, presenting life-safety education programs, rescuing persons in danger, controlling hazardous materials incidents, mitigating the effects of natural disasters, and providing first responder service to people experiencing potentially life-threatening medical emergencies.

The Columbia Fire Department operates from 28 strategically located fire stations throughout Columbia and Richland County to control hostile fires, conduct rescues, mitigate hazardous materials incidents, minimize damage from natural disasters and to stabilize patients suffering from life-threatening medical emergencies. The Division operates City fire stations as well as stations funded under contract to Richland County.

Upon employment with the City of Columbia Fire Department, you will be required to participate in assigned training and successfully meet the requirements for each training class. Training includes, but is not limited to, the CFD 12-Week Recruit Firefighter Program. As a new Firefighter you must successfully complete this training; failure to do so will be grounds for summary dismissal. Also, as a condition of employment, you must successfully pass a six-month probationary period following graduation from the recruit program. Training does not stop here. Each Firefighter must obtain at least 240 hours of training each year to maintain his or her skills and to learn to meet new challenges of the ever-changing job of protecting citizens and their property from a wide variety of hazards.

For information on career opportunities with the CFD, please contact our Human Resources division, which administers the hiring, promotion and training of firefighters and officers, and oversees the Department’s safety program. It manages a model promotional system, trains new firefighters in basic skills and provides advanced instruction to firefighters and officers in technical and supervisory areas. It also coordinates training that is conducted by company officers at fire stations.
