The mission of the Albuquerque Fire Department is to “save lives, and protect property and the environment, while continuing to emphasize fire fighter safety and survival.”

Each member of the Albuquerque Fire Department makes an important contribution toward our goal of protecting and preserving lives and property in and around Albuquerque. We’re proud of the men and women who make up our team. The Albuquerque Fire Department has a wide variety of career opportunities available for individuals who have different interests, talents, and skills. Officers are promoted from within the ranks, so a career with AFD offers potential for advancement and promotion.

To be eligible for the Albuquerque Fire Department, you must be 21 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or GED, and possess a current, valid, and full (permanent) State of New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license at the basic level – or higher – as a minimum requirement. After successfully completing training, each fire fighter is assigned to a fire suppression company for the completion of their probationary period before becoming a permanent member of the Department.

A career with the Albuquerque Fire Department offers stability and competitive rates of pay. Paid sick leave and vacation are granted annually. Each fire fighter receives a full benefits package that includes partially paid medical and dental insurance, life insurance, and a retirement plan.
