The New Orleans Fire Department suppression division is charged with responding to alarms of fire, performing suppression functions, including life safety and property conservation, and assuring complete extinguishment. 

Fire Suppression members regularly participate in in-service inspections, fire safety educational surveys and numerous other fire-related duties. Fire Suppression also manages Hazardous Materials emergency responses and the Medical First Responder program. 

To become a firefighter you must be at least 18 years old, live in Orleans Parish, pass a written exam, medical exam, background check, psychological exam, drug screening, and physical agility test. 

The New Orleans Fire Department Recruit Training Program is a 20 week program designed to qualify recruits for becoming Probationary Firefighters. The training is composed of physical fitness, classroom and field firefighter training and First Responder Medical Training. During the 4 month program recruits are tested to become Nationally Certified Fire Fighters through Louisiana State University.

New Orleans Paramedics work for the City of New Orleans Health Department, and serve more than 400,000 permanent residents. 

Position requires possession of a current provisional or permanent National Registry Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic.   Candidates perform highly responsible specialized work, under the direction of a physician, in the recognition, assessment, and control of medical emergencies; transportation and care of patients to a medical facility, and related work as required.
