FirefighterIndianapolis

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) is located in Marion County in central Indiana. The IFD Fire Service District covers metropolitan Indianapolis and portions of Marion County. In 2010, the IFD responded to a combined total of approximately 120,000 runs. The IFD is responsible for the safety of 800,000+ citizens and is a fully professional fire department.

The IFD is spread throughout the fire district and its facilities include fire stations and multiple administrative offices and services located at several additional sites throughout Indianapolis and Marion County. IFD hires new firefighters each year. The competition for firefighter positions is rigorous and the desirability of being an Indianapolis firefighter is evidenced by the fact that more than 1,000 applicants will compete for the 15 to 30 positions offered.

The IFD firefighter selection process is a full merit system that screens firefighter applicants using written tests, agility tests, structured oral interviews and fitness testing. Each candidate must also undergo a comprehensive medical examination and background investigation. The IFD does hire civilian paramedics to meet the need for open vacancies in their EMS Operations Division.

FirefighterFort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Fire Department proudly protects about 210,000 people living in an area of 82 square miles. We operate out of 14 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. We have an ISO rating of 3.

Our department was established in 1839 and now employs 300+ firefighters supported by civilian employees. The department serves a diverse population and its focus is to protect property and save lives through innovative fire prevention, public education and fire suppression coupled with fire investigations that determine cause and origin. We are committed to high quality customer service that is sensitive to the needs of Fort Wayne citizens and visitors alike.

The physical and mental demands of firefighting are sometimes underestimated. Demanding physical standards are absolutely necessary because firefighting requires high levels of physical fitness and mental alertness. At present, Firefighters must also be good students to stay up with the technologies and changes in Fire Prevention, suppression, hazardous materials, rescue and medical procedures. This involves many subjects, such as Public Education, Arson Investigation, Emergency Medical and Transportation Procedures. In addition, Firefighters are becoming more involved with the levels of physical and mental fitness that are essential for Firefighters to meet the demands of their job.
