The mission of the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) today is the same as it was in 1851, to save lives and protect property. However, today the Department protects the City and County of Honolulu with a force of over 1,100 fire fighters. 

The island is divided into five battalions containing 44 fire stations. The total number of companies in a platoon is 42 engine companies, 13 ladder or quint companies, 2 rescue companies, 2 hazardous material companies, 2 tower companies, 1 fireboat company, 6 tankers, and 2 helicopters. Hazmat 1 and 2, the hazardous materials companies, are dispatched to incidents involving petroleum, radioactive substances, or toxic chemicals. Also supporting the HFD’s mission are several personal watercrafts and 3 rescue boats.

MICT/Paramedic & EMT’sCity And County Of Honolulu EMS

The City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services recruits for the position of Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) and EMT. The City and County of Honolulu has Advanced Life Support Ambulance units and Rapid Response Paramedic units.

EMTs are eligible for limited term contracts with the City and County of Honolulu EMS.

MICTs can apply for permanent positions with the City and County of Honolulu EMS as a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I.

The Hawai’i County Fire Department has the responsibility of protecting life and property from fire and multifarious emergencies. In answer to this challenge, the Fire Department’s multi-emergency work force manages a variety of crises throughout the Island of Hawai’i and its adjacent shores.  

Emergency situations routinely managed include: fire suppression (structural, vehicular, brush, crops, etc.); medical emergencies (pre-hospital for traumatic or natural illness); land and sea rescues or searches involving water sports or fishing, overdue hikers, hunters, or fishermen, etc.; vehicular or other extrications; and hazardous materials mitigation of petroleum or chemical product leaks, ruptures, or spills.   

The HCFD employs over 325 personnel to meet this challenge, and responds to more than 14,000 calls for fire suppression, rescue, and EMS annually.
